"Banner blindness and user indifference" - bingo! I had not seen this one, but I do like it. But they could have gone further - what about an interesting definition for "Prius" lodged into the dictionary? As you say, it's about creative collaboration. There should be more of it!

There are essentially three different agency models - 1) the "full service" agency who says they can do it all and integrate it all: TV, print, radio, interactive (including seo, sem, social media, application development, etc.) out-of-home, PR, experiential marketing, CRM, Direct, etc. 2) the holding company who says they can help integrate through their agency network 3) The specialty agencies who excel at a focused set of competencies and depend largely on their clients and the good will collaboration of other agencies to integrate.

I've seen little evidence of any agency pulling off #1, R/GA and CP+B probably come closest, but not close enough to my liking. #2 Just doesn't work, period. #3 is closest to the optimal model, but it's missing a critical piece - the strategy/integration ringmaster. This element can't be the brand manager or the traditional agency AOR. Imo, they should be an independent entity who recieves no compensation for production or media, has no incentives beyond meeting the brand's marketing objectives.

I'll write more about this in the coming weeks.

Good post. All true stuff. I guess the most obvious truism is that you can't get people to change professionally unless their careers depend on it. Ironically, the thought of irrelevance for some isn't enough.

So, what's your perfect agency? Or is that no longer the point or pipe dream?

Definitely an interesting way to do advertising: making advertising the interface.

But as you say... hard to replicate for other types of sites.

Hi Tom,
I couldn't agree with you more!
Incredible virtuosity along with incredibly innovative and ground-breaking music - simply awesome : )

It is for this reason that I have personally put together a petition, to try and help the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Committee overcome their pigheadedness in their longstanding refusal to induct musicians under the "prog rock" genre...
And my first musician under the HoF Induction spotlight is Adrian Belew....

I have tried to put together a concise collage of Adrian's huge body of work spanning 40 years.... If the committee genuinely cannot see that Adrian deserves to be Inducted, after reading and considering this - here is an excerpt from the opening paragraph.....

"The career of guitar visionary Adrian Belew has been an inventive musical odyssey. Combining his virtuosic guitar playing and multi-dimensional vocals, with the complete lexicon of electronically produced animal sounds and symphonic musical instruments, Adrian has mastered the ability to journey into the avant-garde while still anchoring his compositions to the fundamental driving forces of pop and rock, often playing along the outer edges of contemporary music in ways that have been at times punky, new wave, comedic, bizarre, and twisted."

then I will curl up into a little ball and expire!

Please have a look at my little petition, and if, after you read it, you feel that Adrian Belew also deserves to be Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then please add your name to my list of signatures......

Thank you from the Bottom of my heart : )
